About Min Sang Kim, Countertenor
Praised for his "unusually ethereal and powerful voice" on the operatic stage, countertenor Dr. Min Sang Kim has captivated audiences worldwide with his exceptional artistry and versatility. His leading roles include Giulio Cesare and Tolomeo in Giulio Cesare, Nerone in Agrippina, Oberon in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Ottone in L’incoronazione di Poppea, Endimione in La Calisto, and Orfeo in Orfeo ed Euridice. Most recently, he premiered the role of Witchfinder in Ashi Day’s Waking the Witch, a work initially supported by OPERA America’s Discovery Grants and the Virginia B. Toulmin Foundation.
With a wealth of experience on the operatic stage, Kim has collaborated with esteemed orchestras and ensembles, including the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Washington Bach Consort, Dolce Contento Ensemble, American Bach Soloists, Gateway Chamber Orchestra, Concert Chorale of Nashville, Washington National Cathedral Choir, Washington Concert Society, and Daegu Orchestra among others. His frequent appearances in prestigious venues such as Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center, Strathmore, Symphony Hall, Daegu Concert House, and the Seoul Arts Center underscore his extensive experience and unwavering dedication to his craft.
Kim has earned numerous awards and accolades, including victories at the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions (Capitol District), Annapolis Opera Competition, Camille Coloratura Awards, Saltworks Opera Competition, Concert Artists International Music Competition, and Osaka International Music Competition. Additionally, he was a finalist in the Renata Tebaldi International Voice Competition and Vocal Arts DC Competition. His contributions to the arts have been recognized with the Official Citation from the Maryland Legislative Asian-American and Pacific-Islander Caucus for his efforts in promoting the arts and supporting immigrant communities in Maryland.
Originally from South Korea, Kim embarked on his academic journey at The Juilliard School’s Pre-college, later earning his Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance from the New England Conservatory of Music. He continued his studies at the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University, where he earned both a Master of Music and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Voice. Notably, he was the first countertenor to receive a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the institution, and he was a recipient of the George Woodhead Quasi-Endowed Scholarship and the G. Raymond Ziegler Endowed Scholarship.
Kim currently serves as an Assistant Professor of Voice at Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, TN.
